Presenting the Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, and his fantastic photographs from the International Space Station.
Cosmonauts are the Russian equivalent to Astronauts and this Russian Hero has been in space not once or twice but three times. In 2002 he flew on the Shuttle STS-112, and he later, twice went on the ISS in 2007 and finally in 2010. During his 2010 stay he was ISS-24 flight engineer under Astronaut Douglas Wheelock whom we have features on Triggerpit a year ago. Cosmonaut Yurchikhin was also the Commander of the Soyuz TMA-19 that brought himself, Douglas Wheelock and Shannon Walker safely back to Earth.
All photos below are taken by Astronaut Yurchikihin and posted with the permission of the Russian Space Agency.
Unfortunately Cosmonaut Yurchikhin does not provide captions to many of the photographs and we have no idea what the photos are on. So we would like to ask you readers to send us you guesses to any photo with a tile ending with a colon “:”. Please post your suggestions in the comment section at the bottom. [50 pictures]

Thank you Laura, we added your find to the #1 caption! And we gave you credit for the find.
These are very pretty. Thank you very much.
WOW thats really beautiful.
Thats shows the saying…Location location location….
The clouds in picture #19 are probably noctilucent – and not storm leftovers.
Thank you, we think you are correct and have added your comment above into the caption.
#27 is Mt. St. Helens. You can tell by the horse-shoe shaped crater and the lava dome in the center of the crater. I have also compared the photo to other similar pictures.
Thank you Jacob. We think you are correct so we added you comment to the caption under the photo. Keep it up!
No. 16 is an island in French Polynesia. Don’t remember the name of it. Look at google earth.

#5. Libia. Great Manmade River
Photo #1 Nikumaroro: Just happens to be the place where The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) is searching for Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan and their Lockheed Electra 10-E Special. See TIGHAR.org.
#5 is the Columbia River at Umatilla, Oregon. South is up in this photo.
In #4, the astronaut is moving a Control Moment Gyro (or CMG). It’s used to control the attitude of the ISS.
#44 is particularly interesting because it captures the Orion constellation (a fairly famous constellation) in the background.
#47: Atoll – Satellite picture of Atafu atoll in Tokelau. Tokelau is a territory of New Zealand comprising three tropical coral atolls in the South Pacific Ocean.[1] The United Nations General Assembly designated Tokelau a Non-Self-Governing Territory. Until 1976 the official name was Tokelau Islands. Tokelau is sometimes referred to by Westerners by the older, colonial name of The Union Islands.

#39: Malaspina Glacier, Alaska. The Malaspina Glacier in southeastern Alaska is the largest piedmont glacier in the world. Situated at the head of the Alaska Panhandle, it is about 65 km (40 mi) wide and 45 km (28 mi) long, with an area of some 3,900 km2 (1,500 sq mi). It is named in honor of Alessandro Malaspina, an Italian explorer in the service of the Spanish Navy, who visited the region in 1791.

#37: The Kufra oasis in Lybia. Kufra /ˈkuːfrə/ (also spelled Cufra in Italian, Koufra in French or Khofra) is a basin (Arab: Uádi el Kufra) [1] and oasis group in Al Kufrah District, southeastern Cyrenaica in Libya. Kufra is historically important above all because at the end of nineteenth century it became the center and holy place of the Senussi order. […] At the beginning of the ’70s, Libya launched in Kufra a great cultivation project aimed at developing agriculture in the desert. LEPA irrigation is provided by fossil water beneath the ground surface, the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System, a non-renewable source and the only accessible water resource in the area. Rotors (high sprinkler that rotates) provide irrigation and the obtained circles have a diameter af about 1 km (1,100 yd) and can be observed from space.

Great shots. The earth is so beautiful seen from space
Thank you
The pictures are awesome. I just hope that nobody can really find this unknown places. I’m sick of this money/super-fancy-hotels/exhausting destruction.
Photo #17 is “Glorieuses Islands” (Iles Glorieuses in french) a french oversea territory located in the northern Mozambique channel, about 160 kilometres northwest of Madagascar.
I went there in a scientific expedition in 2009, these islans are wonderfull!
